AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s rules governing the sales of recreational marijuana are facing a potentially pivotal vote by a legislative committee.
The state has provisionally adopted the marijuana rules, and the Maine Legislature is in the process of turning them into state law. The state Committee on Veterans & Legal Affairs must vote on the proposal before it goes to the full Legislature.
The committee met to consider the proposal on Tuesday, but did not cast a vote. It’s scheduled to reconvene as soon as Thursday.
Maine voters approved of legalizing marijuana in a public vote in 2016. State officials say retail adult use marijuana could arrive in stores as soon as early 2020.
The proposed rules cover subjects such as licensure and retail sales. Maine already has legal medical marijuana.
